It’s a funny thing clearing out. I think it might be the same no matter how big a clearout you have. Sock Drawer, Fridge, or like us, a loft full of the unknown.
There’s the first phase…this is the part where you just look at it. Us blokes describe this as “Weighing it Up“, but the reality is its the same for all of us…”Holy shit, where do we start?!”. This is the easiest bit however…you just pick up the first thing you want to clear out & the rest kind of just follows.
Second phase is The Graft. You just get stuck in, dust / socks / mouldy cheese* (*delete as appropriate) goes flying all over the place. This is where the joy bit comes in…how good does it feel when you’re finally faced with an empty space where the clutter used to be?
And maybe this wouldn’t happen with a fridge, but clearing out a drawer or cupboard you haven’t been into for a while may just turn up some memories. Good or otherwise, its hard to keep focused on the job in hand when you stop to remember & share stories. Some stuff is hard to let go of, other stuff not so hard…but you can’t keep everything for ever I guess.
Otherwise where will you put all your new stuff?
